2019 was a weird year for me that emotionally felt like it was split in half. From January to May I frantically worked on finishing my short film “Zebra Munchies”. In May, I finished “Zebra Munchies” and submitted it to a pile of festivals, After that, I didn’t have any major art goals and really wanted to take a break from long term projects, so I worked on my convention art, did some freelance, and did Inktober. It was nice to have a break from a long term project, especially since “Zebra Munchies” was haunting me for a couple of years. I learned a lot from the process of finishing a short film like that, and I want to do more short films.
I’m starting to feel more ready for a long
term-ish project in 2020, but my long term goal is to improve my
draftsmanship so I can create consistent, TV-quality artwork. Making
sure I reach that goal is more important to me than finishing a project
in 2020, so here are my goals in order.
- Complete 1-2 Schoolism classes as well as Toniko Pantoja’s animation course. I’m working on Tonika’s course right now, and for the Schoolism classes I’m eyeing Robert Kondo and Dice Tatsumi’s painting class, and I’d also like to do the character design and visual development courses.
- Actually manage my Patreon and put out a reward each month. Related: post new listings on my Etsy each month.
- Create at least 3 TV quality animation shots that I can put in my demo reel to replace the weakest shots. Stretch goal: replace every shot in my traditional animation reel except for the first and last shot.
- Contact ten professionals who have careers like the one I want to have to ask for informational interviews. Going to include some people who it would scare me to contact because half the point of this is just getting used to reaching out to people.
Get my website up and running on WordPress. I’m 90% of the way there- just working on getting the URL moved from the Wix hosting to the WordPress hosting.
Update: If you’re reading this on my website and not Tumblr, I did it! I’m now self-hosting this site on WordPress! Now for the rest of this list.
On a personal and political level, I’m scared of 2020. But I think if I tackle it right, it could be my best professional year ever.
